It was very hard for everyone to say goodbye as the Ishinomaki students returned to DC, but we all cherished their visit. The students enjoyed Potomac Mills, and more sightseeing as they stayed two more nights in DC. Richmond students Charlotte and Ethan were reunited with the group for dinner for one last goodbye. Thank you to Cameron Peek, a friend of Taylor’s and former Sendai Japan Exchange & Teaching (JET) Counselor in International Relations (CIR) for joining the group for dinner in Georgetown. The group returned to Ishinomaki the next day via Tokyo and Sendai Thank you All Nippon Airways (ANA) for the great service and discount flights! We were glad to hear from chaperone Yuka that the group had arrived home to tell their families of the happy time they had in Richmond.

The Ishinomaki students and host families toured Richmond including the City Observatory on top of City Hall and going to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. They also enjoyed Carytown and shopping for gifts (omiyage) to bring home to their families and friends. They performed the “Fishermen’s Dance” at the farewell barbeque for all of the host families and friends to enjoy. The group also included some of the TOMODCAHI Randolph Macon College Research Program participants who had returned from Japan the day before and Saitama Sister City officials.

TAMF supports high school students’ volunteer activities for teaching how to deal with any disasters. Those Ishinomaki Nishi High School students visited 8 different temporary housing community centers today. They played cards about how to survive, how to protect yourself, what if electricity stops and those things. Those cards were created by Save the Children. Akai temporary center where I visited today was built by Bosch. Emergency goods are placed at the easy place near the entrance
